"When given the decision to side with Wolverine or Cyclops in the split of the X-Men, Noriko decides that she's had enough of her squad being used as pawns between them and sets up her own faction. First order of business: go and recruit some old allies and get the Academy X gang back together." (courtesy of

Although in the past Noriko has been unsure if she is leadership material, she decides that for the sake of her friends (who she would literally do anything for) they need to strike out on their own. While Scott and Wolverine are busy having a pissing contest for the umpteenth time, Nori and the rest of the New X-Men who decide to follow her take care of business the old school way-- putting aside personal beliefs and morals in favor of protecting Mutant-kind by any means necessary.
Any means. Whatever it takes.
Noriko tries to be the voice of reason, the leader, the mature one, but the job grates on her. She is busy trying to make sure her teammates don't kill each other-- or themselves-- and the stress often makes her fall into the same bad habits (re: so many terrible life choices) they do. Mission Nori gets shit done; Non-Mission Nori is still trying to get her shit together. At the end of the day, her friends know that she has their backs and their best interests at heart, and so they follow her without question.
Since she is a bit older and more comfortable with her powers, Nori can go longer periods without wearing her gauntlets and not electrocute everyone and their mother but they are still necessary long term. Their design is a bit less clunky since their inception, making it easier for her to cover them and blend into crowds, if need be.
